General Advice

Buying safely

Advice to help ensure a safe and successful purchase:

  • Keep things local by meeting face to face to see the item and exchange money. Make sure you are completely happy with the item before handing over any money.
  • If you cannot properly inspect an item prior to payment, use a secure, trackable payment method. Your best guarantee is to use a credit card where possible. Make sure you have all the details in writing.
  • Meet in a well lit public place and take someone with you.
  • Never carry large sums of money with you. For anything expensive, we recommend that you meet with the seller to view the item first. If you wish to then proceed with the purchase, either go to the bank with the seller to make the payment, or arrange to meet somewhere safe with the money.
  • For any goods or services which are legally regulated (e.g. financial, insurance, medical services etc), make sure that the seller is properly registered or qualified before dealing with them.
  • Ask for the full contact details of the seller.
  • Use your common sense. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Selling safely

Here are some tips to help ensure a successful sale:

  • Meet face to face with the buyer to exchange items and money at the same time.
  • Never send items prior to receiving payment.
  • If receiving funds via credit transfer, please ensure that these have been received as 'cleared funds' in your account.
  • Meet in a well lit public place and take someone with you.
  • As always, be cautious about carrying cash. Having received funds, never leave them unattended for example in a briefcase or car. Pay the funds into the bank or lock them in a secure place as soon as possible.
  • Beware of receiving counterfeit money.
  • Use your common sense. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
